What: "Encouragement for the Bipolar Soul" with Daina Gold. When: 1 p.m. Jan. 10. Where: Central Brevard Library and Reference Center, 308 Forrest Ave., Cocoa. Call: 633-1792.
Daina Gold was once at the top. A training manager pulling down big bucks, her advice was valued during a 20-year corporate career.
Four years ago, she was in New York’s Central Park at midnight without a penny to her name.
"I had thrown away my purse because I thought I was John the Baptist’s sister," Gold said. "I was very sure Jesus was coming back, so I wouldn’t need money."
For years, Gold had been successfully treated for bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. But when she went off her medications, her life swerved from manic, creative highs to depressions so dismal she says she almost killed herself.
Gold, who lives in Cape Canaveral, has been back in treatment and rebuilding her life for the past four years. She will talk about her experiences and her book, "Encouragement for the Bipolar Soul," at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Central Brevard Library.
Gold said her program is intended to advise and encourage people who have been found to have the disorder and their families who are trying to cope She also has encouragement for people struggling with a variety of problems.
"I think any human problem can be embraced," she said. "At the very least, the perspective can be shifte, ld from ‘victim’ to ‘victor.’
